     Leland Waldo Cowing, son of Waldo Daniel Cowing and Nellie H. Billington, was born on 5 October 1896 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.^1,2

     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Leland filled out a draft card for World War I on 5 June 1918 (at age 21), while living at Dedham, Hancock, Maine. He was employed as working for H. M. Tripp, Nicolin, Maine and described as height, tall and medium build with light blue eyes and brown hair..³

     Leland, son of Waldo Daniel Cowing and Nellie H. Billington, married Bernice Starkey circa 1919.⁴

     Leland died on 18 December 1962 at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, at age 66.⁵

     Lily L. Cowing, daughter of Calvin Cowing and Angeline C. Burrill, was born circa 1860 at California.^1,2

     Marion Melvina Cowing, daughter of John Frost Cowing and Lucy Ann Saunders, was born on 21 August 1876 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.

     Marion, at age 21, daughter of John Frost Cowing and Lucy Ann Saunders, married Fred Alonzo Black at age 24, son of William Wallace Black and Nancy Jane Burrill, on 21 November 1897 at Holden, Penobscot, Maine, married by H. A. Freeman, Minster of the Gospel, Holden, Maine.^1,2,3

     Marion, at age 73, daughter of John Frost Cowing and Lucy Ann Saunders, married Percy R. Burrill at age 73, son of John Bainbridge Burrill and Ella Agnes Dunn, on 12 October 1949 at Brewer, Penobscot, Maine.⁴

     Marion died in 1965 at Brewer, Penobscot, Maine, and was buried at Union Cemetery, Dedham, Hancock, Maine.⁵

     Martha B. Cowing, daughter of Calvin Cowing and Angeline C. Burrill, was born circa 1870 at California.¹

     Melvina Adelia Cowing, daughter of Daniel Cowing and Rachel Ann Blaisdell, was born on 11 December 1849 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.³

     Melvina died on 29 August 1864 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine, at age 14. Her cause of death was listed as gastric fever⁴ and was buried at Central Cemetery, Dedham, Hancock, Maine.⁵
