Martha Van Dyke, wife of George W. Day
     Martha Van Dyke, daughter of John Van Dyke and Margaret Hazelwood, was born on 7 May 1843 at Cumberland, Illinois.1

She married George Washington Day in 1865 in Cumberland County, Illinois George was the son of Caleb Day who was first married in Clermont Co. Ohio and later married to Catherine Perry on April 2, 1838 in Morgan Co. Indiana. After Caleb's death ( in Morgan Co) Catherine married Wm. Henry Carrell, May 28, 1848. The family made their way to Cumberland Co. and are listed in the 1860 Cumberland Co. Illinois Census.
George W. served in the Civil War and is listed in 1870 Cumberland Co. Illinois census as a farmer. The family later moved to Kansas in October of 1878. The family stayed in Wichita until February 1879 when they traveled to Kingman Co. Kansas. They lived in a dugout one and one half miles south of Brown's Spur.
In 1885 Geo Day is recorded as having a farm in Section 28 in Hoosier Township, Kingman Co. Kansas...George was a member and officer of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Kingman. George later moved to Colorado..unknown where he is buried.2


     Martha married George Washington Day in 1865.

     Martha died on 17 December 1926, at Kingman, Kingman, Kansas, at age 83,2 and was buried at Hoosier Cemetery, Kingman, Kingman, Kansas.3

After the ceremony a supper was served by Mrs. William H. Place.

     Martin and Emma appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Manhassett, Nassau, New York, at Hillcrest Avenue, enumerated April 1940. Martin owned his home, valued at $6900.00. He was working as a gardener for a private estate. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.12
