MARY FRENCH

A memorial service will be held in Greenlawn for Mary ("Dorothy") French a former resident of East Northport who died recently in Denver, Colorado. The service is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, May 17, at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenlawn. Mary French was born and raised on a farm in Hinkley, Minnesota. She had two brothers and two sisters. When she was growing up, she ran track and won numerous first-prize ribbons in many events, according to her daughter, Stephanie French. She used to go school on skis in the winter and was very proud of her perfect attendance throughout her school years. As a young girl, Mary entered the bread making event at the Minnesota State Fair. This was a nice change for her mother, who normally had to bake 12 loaves twice a week. She later won first-place ribbons for her bread. The family lost the farm during the Depression due to a six year drought. Mary moved to Illinois and worked for General Mills. She later moved to New York and bought a home where she was able to enjoy raising flowers and vegetables. Mary worked as a clothing store manager during the 50's. She worked at Martin's, Franklin Simon, and Oppenheim Collins department stores. She lived in New York for nearly 30 years and then moved to Florida to take care of her mother. There she worked at J. C. Penney's until retiring to move to Denver in 1983. Mary enjoyed making craft items for family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and made a quilt for each of her children. Recently she restored a family heirloom quilt. She also enjoyed baking and cooking and had a flair for raising cactus plants. "They always bloomed for her", said her daughter Stephanie. She also enjoyed watching sports events and was an avid Rockies and Broncos fan. She also always rooted for the New York Yankees. Survivors include her brother, Lloyd, of Crown Point, Indiana; two sons, Robert George French of Denver and Frank Ziegler of East Northport; her daughter, Stephanie Horne of Huntington; seven grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.12

Frank William Ziegler, son of Lewis E. Ziegler and Alice Marie Pobstman, was born on 14 March 1882 at Hinckley, Illinois.1,4

Frank married Mary Frederikke Svendsen on 15 November 1909, at Pipestone, Grange, Minnesota.5,6

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Frank filled out a draft card for World War I on 9 September 1918 (at age 36), while living at Hinckley, Pine, Minnesota. He was employed as a self employed farmer and described as height, medium and medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. His mother, Marie, was listed as nearest Relative.7

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Frank filled out a draft card for World War II on 22 April 1942 (at age 60), while living at 145-12-10 East, Dolton, Cook, Illinois. He was working for Morris Grain Company.8

Frank died on 23 October 1961, at Roseland Community Hospital, Chicago, Cook, Illinois, at age 79,9 and was buried at Chapel Hill Gardens South, Oak Lawn, Cook, Illinois.3
