     Azel Edward Gurney, son of Zachariah Gurney Jr. and Matilda Packard, was born on 30 April 1785 at Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts.1,3

     Azel, son of Zachariah Gurney Jr. and Matilda Packard, married Mary 'Polly' Knapp, daughter of Abijah Knapp, in 1815.4

     Azel died on 29 January 1859 at age 73.5 and was buried at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton, Plymouth, Maine.5

     Azel and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of North Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts, enumerated 26 August 1850. Azel was a farmer, his real estate valued at $4000.00. There was a Susan Thorton, age 21 and Thomas Doyle, age 19 in the home. Their children, Alpheus and Azel E. were listed as living with them.6

     Azel and Mary appeared on the 1855 Massachusetts Census of North Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts, enumerated 25 September 1855. Azel was a farmer, his wife, a shoe fitter. There was a Susan Thorton, age 27, Thomas Doyle, age 24 and Richard Holland, age 15 in the home..7
