(From Find A Grave MEMORIAL ID 49389468) Donald S. Voorhies Sr., 93, passed away Monday, at St. Luke Health Services. Mr. Voorhies was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Howard and Cornelia (Stillwell) Voorhies. He had lived in Oswego since 1967. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Force, and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a life-member of the VFW Post #5885. In 1967, he moved to Oswego to work at the Oswego County Savings Bank. In 1968, he was elected treasurer, and served in that position until 1975, when he was elected as the bank's first executive vice-president. He retired in 1980, but continued to serve on the bank's Board of Trustees until the age of 75. He had previously worked at the Brooklyn Trust Co, and the Bowery Savings Bank. Mr. Voorhies was very involved in his community. He was a former president of Operation Oswego County, and served as a director of the Oswego Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Oswego Polish American Club and the Oswego Country Club. He was active in the Oswego County Historical Society, the Heritage Foundation of Oswego, the United Way of Oswego County, and the Oswego Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Civil War Roundtable Group, based in New York City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and gardening. Mr. Voorhies was the husband of the late Martha (Walters) Voorhies, who passed away in 1992. He is survived by his beloved family: 2 daughters, Sarah (Ronald) Uva of Oswego, and Margaret (Patrick) Derousie of Palm Harbor, FL; a son, Donald (Claudia) Voorhies Jr. of Oswego; a sister, Janet Robinson of Long Island; 7 grandchildren, Howard (Ann), Mary (Philip), Christina (Kristopher), Matthew, Michael, Brooks, and Megan; 4 great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Lauren, Paige, and Ryan; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be private. Burial will be in Yaphank Cemetery in Long Island. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Civil War Preservation Trust, 1156 15th St. NW, Suite 900, Washington, DC, 20005.
